Jared held Fenix as he slept peacefully in his arms, and kissed the top of his head. He couldn't sleep. Tonight he was the one staring wide-eyed at the ceiling, too restless to calm down and relax into slumber.

Unlike the ice-rink, dinner had been wonderful – good food, pleasant company, laughter, interesting conversation. Jared had fully enjoyed the almost three hours they’d spent at the restaurant. Even more, he’d enjoyed holding Fenix until he felt his husband’s body relax and his breathing even out. Why couldn't he do the same?

Sighing, Jared gently extracted himself from under Fenix, who stirred and turned the other way, hugging the pillow instead of Jared, and continued to sleep. Tiptoeing quietly out of the room, Jared grabbed his laptop from the desk and headed downstairs to the living room.

He knew why he couldn't sleep. He wanted to research the references Viktoria had provided, and email everyone on her list. The folder she’d given him was still in his bag, so he went to the closet to retrieve it, before flopping down on the sofa and switching his laptop on.

Jared carefully examined the papers, noticing the amount written at the bottom of one of the references. Just handwritten numbers, nothing else. In Sweden, it was illegal to pay for surrogacy. But, professional surrogates – as they called themselves – were expected to be paid. Jared had read in the forums that the future parent was given the sum in a very nondescript way, but every surrogate found their own way of doing it. The important thing was not to get caught accepting the money or requesting payment.

Desperate times called for desperate measure, right? Jared was fully aware he’d be breaking the law by paying Viktoria, but he also didn't understand why the government didn't allow it in the first place. In his opinion, Viktoria, and every other woman in her place, was putting her health – her life – at risk for someone else, and that deserved to be rewarded.

So, he didn't mind paying the money that would make a considerable dent in their savings. With the relocation, the new house, and setting up the studio, their savings had almost vanished. If they took a chance with Viktoria and, God forbid, she screwed them over, they wouldn't be able to afford a new surrogate any time soon.

Although, Viktoria refusing to give them their own child would be a much bigger problem than the damn money.

Jared covered his face with his hands and sighed. What the fuck was he getting into? Wouldn't adoption be a much safer option?

“Hey,” Adam said from the bottom of the stairs, making Jared jump and almost drop his laptop on the floor.

“Jesus! You scared me!”

“Didn't you hear me walk down the stairs?” Adam asked, sitting down next to Jared.

“No.” Jared closed the laptop and left it on the coffee table, turning slightly to Adam. “Sorry, I was caught in my own thoughts.”

Adam was studying him and Jared knew that look well.

“What’s wrong, Jared?” Adam asked quietly.
